The Standard on Fifth Opens in Pittsburgh’s Uptown, Bringing 51 New Apartments to a Long-Vacant Corner

Pittsburgh Urban Media · October 2026

Forty apartments offer affordable rents, as new housing, transit investment and neighborhood planning shape Uptown’s future.

A corner of Pittsburgh’s Uptown neighborhood that sat vacant for years is getting a new chapter — one centered on housing, accessibility and connections to the surrounding community.

The Standard on Fifth, a new 51-unit mixed-income apartment community developed by Beacon Communities LLC, has officially opened at 2120 Fifth Avenue. A ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together company leadership, elected officials and project partners to celebrate the completion of the residential development.

Of the building’s 51 apartments, 40 are designated as affordable to households earning no more than 60% of the area median income. Available in one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts, the apartments are intended to serve a range of residents, including working families and essential workers. The development also includes units designed to accommodate residents with sensory impairments.

The opening adds to a period of residential growth in Uptown, where questions of affordability, neighborhood investment and access to public transportation remain central to the community’s future.

Affordable Housing Meets Neighborhood Revitalization

For residents who want to live near Pittsburgh’s employment centers, cultural destinations and public transportation, access to quality housing at an affordable price can make a meaningful difference.

Beacon Communities CEO Dara Kovel said the project reflects the company’s commitment to developing communities that respond to neighborhood needs.

Robin Wiessmann, executive director and CEO of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, said housing options across income levels can help stabilize communities, bring families together and stimulate neighborhood economic activity.

Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor also pointed to the project’s role in expanding housing opportunities and supporting jobs and community growth along one of the city’s established corridors.

The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh and the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh were among the public partners associated with the project.

Caster D. Binion, executive director of the Housing Authority, emphasized the connection between affordable housing and a healthy city, noting that the development is intended to make city living more accessible to working families, healthcare workers and other residents.

A Location Along Pittsburgh’s Future Transit Corridor

The Standard on Fifth is located along Fifth Avenue, where the University Line bus rapid transit project is expected to change how people travel through Uptown and connect with destinations across the city.

The planned route is expected to open in 2027, with dedicated inbound bus lanes along Fifth Avenue and five new stations in Uptown. The transit investment could strengthen connections between residents, jobs, educational institutions and other essential destinations.

The development also incorporates green infrastructure. A rain garden planned at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Moultrie Street will contribute to stormwater management as part of the project’s environmental design.

These features reflect a broader approach to neighborhood development that considers not only the number of homes being built, but also how residents move through and experience the surrounding community.

Community Planning and Local Input

The project also connects to Uptown’s longer-term planning efforts.

The neighborhood’s EcoInnovation District Plan, adopted in 2017, identified housing near frequent public transportation as an important part of Uptown’s future. The Standard on Fifth advanced through the neighborhood’s REDD committee, where residents review proposed development projects.

That community review process provides an opportunity for neighborhood voices to be part of discussions about what gets built and how new development fits into local priorities. As Uptown continues to evolve, the relationship between new investment and community needs will remain an important part of the conversation.

85 New Homes in One Week

The Standard on Fifth opened just two days after Uptown Flats, a 34-apartment permanent supportive housing development located about a half-mile west.

Together, the two projects represent 85 new apartments opening along the Uptown corridor within the same week, adding to the neighborhood’s housing options through different approaches to residential development.

While The Standard on Fifth offers a mix of market-rate and affordable apartments, Uptown Flats provides permanent supportive housing for residents who need that model of assistance. The two openings underscore the range of housing approaches being pursued in Pittsburgh, from affordable homes for working households to supportive housing designed to help residents maintain stable living arrangements.

Applications Now Open

Beacon Communities, which operates eight properties in the Pittsburgh region and has three additional developments in the pipeline, describes The Standard on Fifth as part of its broader investment in residential communities that support economic vitality and residents’ quality of life.

Applications for apartments at The Standard on Fifth are now open. Prospective residents can find information about apartment availability, eligibility and leasing at livethestandardapts.com.

As new housing and transportation investments take shape in Uptown, the question is not simply how many new apartments can be added, but how those homes contribute to a neighborhood where more Pittsburghers can afford to live, work and build their futures.
