Built by US. Trusted by US. Influencing culture.
PittsburghUrbanMedia.com (PUM) is a Black woman–owned, locally rooted digital publication dedicated to elevating, informing, and empowering African American communities in Pittsburgh and across Pennsylvania.
Launched in August 2009, PUM began as an online magazine created to connect readers to the rich diversity, culture, and lived experiences of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Over the years, it has evolved into a trusted media platform serving a broad urban audience seeking representation, truth, and meaningful dialogue.
Our mission is grounded in economic, political, and social empowerment. We report on the issues that shape our lives—education, health, equity, culture, business, and public policy—with a commitment to accountability, solutions, and community impact. Our storytelling is intentional, informed, and rooted in lived experience.
PittsburghUrbanMedia.com is especially dedicated to strengthening families and addressing long-standing health disparities affecting Black communities. Through accessible resources, informed reporting, and uplifting narratives, we aim to empower readers with knowledge that supports healthier, more resilient lives.
At our core, we believe that when African Americans tell our own stories—authentically and unapologetically—we shape our future. Representation matters, perspective matters, and community-centered journalism matters.
PUM is powered by a passionate team of journalists, editors, and researchers committed to delivering timely news, cultural insight, and thoughtful analysis across the media landscape. Our coverage spans television, film, music, publishing, social media, and the critical issues impacting our region and the nation.
We invite readers, partners, and community leaders to stay engaged, share ideas, and help shape conversations that matter. Together, we remain in the mix—amplifying Black voices, informing minds, and advancing the progress of Black Pittsburgh.
