PITTSBURGH — Runners, walkers, and cyclists are invited to lace up their sneakers, grab their bikes, and experience one of Pittsburgh’s most meaningful community events as the Historic Hill 5K Run, Walk & Ride returns on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026.
Beginning and ending at Freedom Corner in the Historic Hill District, the annual event is more than a race — it’s a celebration of health, history, and the enduring spirit of one of Pittsburgh’s most iconic neighborhoods.
This year’s theme, “Be the Change You Want to See,” encourages participants of all ages and fitness levels to take steps toward healthier lifestyles while honoring the Hill District’s rich cultural legacy.

“A Race Like No Other — experience Pittsburgh history one step, or pedal stroke, at a time.”
— Historic Hill 5K Organizers
Unlike many traditional road races, the Historic Hill 5K offers participants three ways to take part: run, walk, or ride a bicycle — making it one of the few events in the region to welcome cyclists alongside runners and walkers.
As participants travel through the historic streets of the Hill District, they’ll pass landmarks that tell the story of a neighborhood once known as the heart of Black culture and jazz in Pittsburgh. Following the Great Migration, the Hill District became home to legendary musicians, entrepreneurs, churches, and civil rights leaders whose influence continues to shape the city’s history.

Health, Heritage & Community
The event also shines a spotlight on an important mission — raising awareness about health disparities affecting African American communities. Organizers say the race is designed to inspire healthier living while bringing neighbors together in a positive, family-friendly atmosphere.
Freedom Corner, where the race begins and ends, serves as a fitting backdrop. Long recognized as a gathering place for civil rights activism, community celebrations, and public demonstrations, the landmark symbolizes resilience, unity, and progress.
Participants of all fitness levels are welcome — the event is designed for the whole community.
