Pittsburgh’s Night of Light: Water Lantern Festival Invites Residents to Write Their Hopes, Honor Memories and Let Them Float

A unique evening of music, food, family activities and thousands of glowing lanterns is coming to the North Side on August 22.

What would you write if you had one lantern and a moment to put something meaningful into the world?

A hope for the future. A message to someone you love. A memory of someone who is no longer here. A personal goal. Or perhaps simply a few words about what you are grateful for.

Pittsburgh residents will have the opportunity to do just that when the Water Lantern Festival comes to Allegheny Commons Park West on Saturday, August 22. The nationally traveling festival combines music, food, family activities and reflection before culminating in the evening release of thousands of illuminated lanterns.

The experience is designed to move from a lively community gathering to a quieter, more reflective moment as attendees gather near the water and release their personalized lanterns.

More Than a Festival

Organizers describe the event as an opportunity to slow down, reconnect and create a meaningful experience with family and friends. Guests can personalize their lanterns with messages of hope, love, remembrance, gratitude or personal intentions. As the evening progresses, the lanterns become part of a shared display of light across the water.

What’s New in 2026

This year’s festival includes several additions and updates. The 2026 season introduces new lantern designs and expanded colorways, quotes and themes in the festival’s Radiant collection.

Before the lantern launch, attendees can enjoy lawn games, photo opportunities and an updated scavenger hunt, along with food trucks and live entertainment. The festival also says its 2026 live music lineup has been expanded to include local and regional performers throughout the evening.

Then Comes the Light

The lantern launch is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. As darkness settles in, participants gather with their lanterns and release them together, creating what organizers describe as a shared moment of hope, inspiration and renewal.

For some, the experience may simply be beautiful. For others, the message written on the lantern may carry considerably more meaning. The festival encourages participants to dedicate lanterns to people they love, honor cherished memories and use the experience as an opportunity to think about where they are headed next.

A Focus on Stewardship

With thousands of lanterns involved, environmental responsibility is an important part of the event’s presentation. Organizers say the lanterns are fully biodegradable and that a dedicated cleanup team collects lanterns and other materials following the launch. They also say each venue is restored to its original condition following the event.

A Family-Friendly Evening

The festival is designed for all ages and includes food, music, games, giveaways and other activities. Organizers are also inviting local food trucks, vendors and businesses interested in participating in the event or becoming involved in the community experience.
