For more than two decades, Pittsburgh’s New Hazlett Theater has quietly become one of the region’s most important homes for artists willing to take creative risks.
Now, as the regional arts community continues to navigate financial pressures and organizational change, the Northside landmark is making one of the biggest announcements in its history.
The New Hazlett Theater has named Melissa Cardello-Linton its first-ever Artistic Director, marking a historic milestone during the organization’s 20th anniversary celebration. At the same time, the theater is launching ForgeWorks, an ambitious production development initiative designed to help local productions grow into regional and national successes.
A Historic First
Melissa Cardello-Linton becomes the first Artistic Director in the theater’s 20-year history, stepping into a newly created role after serving as Artistic Producer since 2024.
A Pittsburgh native with more than two decades of professional theater experience, Cardello-Linton brings a unique cultural perspective to the position. She is Black, Italian, Polish and Ukrainian, studied theater at Boston Conservatory, and earned the prestigious Lynn Swann Scholarship to study ballet with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

Introducing ForgeWorks

Alongside the leadership announcement, the theater revealed a completely refreshed visual identity developed with Pittsburgh-based Bootstrap Design Co., including an updated logo, modern visual identity, new photography by Matt Dayak, and brand positioning centered on artistic collaboration and innovation.
A Building With Extraordinary History
Few Pittsburgh theaters possess a history as rich as the New Hazlett. Originally constructed in 1889 as the city’s first Carnegie Music Hall, the building was dedicated by President Benjamin Harrison. When demolition threatened the building during the 1960s, community advocates rallied to save it.
