Prelude to Implementing the 25th Amendment

Daniel Barnes’ January 9, 2019 NBC news report indicated, three weeks into the partial government shutdown, 800,000 federal workers faced the prospect of not receiving paychecks; national parks are filled with trash and bathrooms overflowing; a significant number of unpaid TSA workers are calling out sick; Coast Guard members are working without pay; low income subsidies are not being renewed; and the food stamp program runs the risk of being shut down.  A USA Today post detailed how the shutdown impacts food safety.  Farmers face the disasters associated with not receiving their government checks.  Also suffering are those business people who depend on contracts with the federal government.

Albeit a large sum, we must not be bamboozled by the $5,000,000,000 brouhaha related to building a Wall on the southern border.  To help put in perspective what seems to be an astronomical number, consider the fact that there are individuals such as Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and others in the Forbes 400 who are wealthy enough to build the Wall.  Additional insight into the comparative significance of $5 billion dollars can be gained by noting that the University of Michigan announced recently that it had raised more than $5 billion dollars during its Victors for Michigan fundraising campaign.

In the context of the more than $4 trillion federal budget, $5 billion is actually a small amount given that it takes 1000 billion to reach a trillion.  Metaphorically speaking, the ripple caused by a $5 billion hit to the federal budget would be like dropping a penny in a large swimming pool.  Also of critical importance is the fact that the “powers that be” have no problem in running nearly incomprehensible federal deficits which, at the moment, is on pace to exceed a trillion dollars for the year (See January 8, 2019, New York Times). Why then has the fight over a possible $5 billion allocation for the Wall led to the devastation associated with a government shutdown?

In my opinion, the Wall is about lying gone wild, e.g., lying about Mexico paying for the Wall and then trying to shake down American citizens to pay for the Wall; lying about how immigrants and drugs enter our country; lying about Russian collusion; and POTUS 45 lying at a rate of 6,420 lies over 649 days in office (See Glenn Kessler, Salvador Rizzo and Meg Kelly, November 2, 2018).  Then, when the lies are exposed and adults in the room say, “No,” an infantile temper tantrum was thrown without a scintilla of regard for its impact on others.

As Senator Schumer stated in response to POTUS 45’s address to the nation, “My fellow Americans, we address you tonight for one reason only: the president of the United States — having failed to get Mexico to pay for his ineffective, unnecessary border wall, and unable to convince the Congress or the American people to foot the bill — has shut down the government. American democracy doesn’t work that way. We don’t govern by temper tantrum. No president should pound the table and demand he gets his way or else the government shuts down, hurting millions of Americans who are treated as leverage. Tonight — and throughout this debate and his presidency — President Trump has appealed to fear, not facts; division, not unity…”

The Wall is about what happens when a “drowning man is grasping for a straw” as a new national order is taking shape.  The despicable Wall conduct is dredged up from the fear engendered as an “Equity and Social Justice Tsunami” results in people of different races, gender, sexuality, religion, economic status, and cultures become empowered.  The Wall is an irrational reaction to the “Blue Wave” that hit Congress during the most recent election and now the “rip currents” threaten to tear down the alternative reality POTUS 45 tried to create.  The Wall stems from the paranoia engendered by the “tidal wave” that is likely to accompany Robert Muller’s report.

Tragically, the irrational Wall behavior reminds one of what happens when “the Emperor has no clothing.”  As Representative Ayanna Pressley “testified,” “I rise today in opposition to the occupant of the White House.  Mr. Trump, you took an oath just as I did five days ago, to protect and defend the Constitution and the American people.  Sir, you dishonor that oath. You devalue the life of the immigrant, the worker, and the survivor. I see right through you and so do the American people. This has nothing to do with border security.  Your shutdown, another Trump generated crisis, has brought a tsunami of hurt.”

A significant take away from the Wall tirade is that “we the people” and our elected representatives should study closely the traits associated with sociopathic persons, e.g., “…their complete lack of conscience, lack of empathy, remorse, guilt or shame…” and their “compulsive pathological lying.” https://datingasociopath.com/sociopath-character-traits/lack-of-empathy-guilt-remorse-or-shame/  The findings of a valid and reliable psychological investigation might indicate that the Wall related behavior is a sign that the time has come for invoking the 25th Amendment!

Given the harm that the partial government shutdown is doing to so many Americans, one might consider the possibility of Congress giving in to the demand to “build that Wall.”  To do so would be like a father giving a child a bowl of the child’s favorite ice cream plus a half dozen of the child’s favorite cookies immediately after the child threw their full dinner plate on the floor and screamed “Daddy, I hate you!”  Inappropriately reinforced, the child will do worse in the future.

We might well be in a state of emergency, but not the one POTUS 45 is considering.  In terms of the national security, the 25th Amendment might be the best medicine for the child in residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500.
