PUM Hot Jobs: Two Exciting Community Development Opportunities

The Hazelwood Initiative is a nonprofit community development corporation (CDC) operating in the Hazelwood and Glen Hazel neighborhoods. As a CDC, the mission of the Hazelwood Initiative is to be community driven, providing a shared stronger voice for greater Hazelwood by gathering community input to build a sense of hope, harmony, and promise as well as supporting human, spiritual and continuing community development. The Hazelwood Initiative is expanding in size, impact, and scale and has an immediate need for two key individuals to join the organization, with expertise in resident engagement and community organizing, and residential and commercial real estate development. The Heinz Endowments has committed to a three-year $1.14M grant to support the growth and increased capacity of the Hazelwood Initiative. This is part of a place-based, collective impact approach to community investment being championed by the foundation, directly benefiting the Hazelwood neighborhood.

Hazelwood is a City of Pittsburgh neighborhood of 5,033 residents (2010 Census) located along the northern shore of the Monongahela River, approximately four miles from Downtown Pittsburgh. The neighborhood developed over 100 years ago, shaped by several steel and coke-making plants located in and around the community. In recent decades, Hazelwood has lost its manufacturing base and has experienced many of the same challenges faced by communities with similar dynamics along the Monongahela River Valley. However, due to the redevelopment and community engagement efforts of organizations such as the Hazelwood Initiative, this neighborhood is benefiting from an investment in ideas, creativity, and capital, leading to a bold vision for the future of Hazelwood.

Director of Real Estate Development:

The Director of Real Estate Development (Director) is an essential member of The Hazelwood Initiative’s leadership team, and a key team member in the growth and development of the neighborhood. The Director manages and leads real estate (residential, commercial and other) and economic development activity for the organization, including business attraction, retention, expansion efforts, housing acquisition, redevelopment and construction initiatives, and implementation of the neighborhood housing strategy. This position will work to provide guidance to individuals and companies to establish, relocate, or expand their businesses within the community. The position will include assistance in the planning and coordination of community development projects, assist business and residential applicants with local and State permitting processes, and provide research for CDC sponsored projects. For full job description: http://jobs.nonprofittalent.com/job/director-real-estate-development-2/

Director of Community Engagement:

The Director of Community Engagement (Director) is an essential member of The Hazelwood Initiative’s leadership team, and a key team member in the growth and development of the neighborhood. The Director helps develop and implement strategies to build relationships with community members, connect residents to useful resources, and enhance civic-engagement and resident empowerment. The Director reports to the Executive Director and will likely have interns to supervise and manage. However, this individual will work collaboratively with interns, consultants, and others in the organization. More important however, is this individual’s interpersonal and communication skills and their ability to work effectively in the community with all residents, stakeholders, community groups, and elected officials. For full job description: http://jobs.nonprofittalent.com/job/director-community-engagement/
