MCG Jazz announces our 29th annual jazz concert season! The series begins on October 3, 2015 and runs through April 22, 2016, showcasing almost 30 headlining artists and over 135 individual musicians! This season represents collaboration and connection, as we showcase music from all generations of jazz and invite the audience and artists to connect to the music, MCG and each other. A major feature of the new season is the fact that 12 of the 16 shows feature artists that have never appeared on the MCG Jazz stage or are premiering entirely new projects!
Lisa Fischer, noted talent and recent star of the Oscar winning documentary Twenty Feet from Stardom appears for two concerts on October 9th. Al Jarreau, singing-sensation, phenomenon and superstar will join us just one week later on October 14th. Recent Grammy award winner,Arturo O’Farrill Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra premieres at MCG on February 12th, and the The Hot Sardines make their Pittsburgh debut on March 11th.
Making return appearances to MCG Jazz are Yellowjackets (back at MCG after six years away,) sax master and MCG favorite David Sanborn and Jack DeJohnette in collaboration with tap star and innovator, Savion Glover. David Benoit returns to MCG after a 5-year absence with his charming holiday special David Benoit Christmas Tribute to Charlie Brown with special guest Jane Monheit.
The Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra will present two concerts on the 2015-16 season. We are thrilled to have them back for their holiday program, this time with special guest Ann Hampton Callaway, who (along with the PJO) will release a Christmas record this December with MCG Jazz. We will see the PJO again in April, this time with special guest flutist NEA Jazz Master Hubert Laws. And that’s not all for large jazz ensembles! Igor Butman & the Moscow Jazz Orchestra will make a rare US appearance here on October 23rd, and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra will return to town next March.
We continue to offer our weekday programming (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) at 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm and our Saturday programming at 6:00 pm and 8:30 pm.
Choose-your-own concert subscription packages of four or more concerts are available now. Single tickets range from $49.50 – $65.00 and will go on sale in August. Please call the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild Jazz Box Office at 412-322-0800 for more information or visit www.mcgjazz.org.
