Larimer, East Liberty residential projects to receive substantial support

Projects will add affordable housing, stimulate neighborhood economies

State Rep. Ed Gainey, D-Allegheny,  announced that two residential development projects in Larimer and East Liberty have been selected to receive substantial support from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.

Together, the two projects were recently approved to receive $2.25 million in Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement funds and more than $1.2 million in tax credits.

“I’m pleased to see the state investing in our communities and promoting development that will expand affordable housing options for the working families of Larimer and East Liberty,” Gainey said. “By promoting the responsible redevelopment of our communities, we are lifting them up, creating jobs and spurring additional economic activity.”

The projects include an adaptive re-use of the historic Larimer School on Larimer Avenue and Winslow Street, including two townhouses, which together will have 42 units, 18 of which will be eligible for HUD Section 8 assistance.

The other major project being funded involves the construction and rehabilitation of a four-story building at 327 N. Negley Ave. in Pittsburgh, which will result in 45 residential units, 10 of which will be eligible for Section 8 assistance, with another 6 eligible for Section 811 assistance.

In addition to the two major residential redevelopment projects, additional housing funding was approved for a Habitat for Humanity project in Larimer, which will rehabilitate two vacant properties, and for the rehabilitation of seven properties in Garfield by East Liberty Development Inc.
