HAITI: Behind the Headlines
Join with local journalists, nonprofit workers, and multimedia storytellers who have traveled to Haiti. They are in conversation at the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Community Engagement in Homewood on Feb. 24, 2020, at 5:30 pm.
News headlines often glare that Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere. Most stories from the island nation capture the lack and the need that exist there. Sure, this is part of the story, but it’s not the whole story. They use the community conversation as to explore the resilience of the Haitian people – an innovative Christian pastor, the founder of English-language school, a community leader who fights for clean water -- as well as other everyday folks who “against all odds” continue to make a difference in Haiti.
Conversationalists include:
Ervin Dyer, writer and sociologist, who focuses on Africana storytelling
Allegra Battle, multimedia journalist, blogger, and writer
Sam Bojarski, freelance journalist and contributor to The Haitian Times
Maureen O’Brien, chair of the Hope for Haiti Committee, based in Aspinwall.
Reporting projects by Sam Bojarski and Ervin Dyer supported by the Pulitzer Center.
