Fox Chapel Farmers Market Opens June 14 in New Location

Farmers Market FlyerThe Fox Chapel Farmers Market at Shady Side Academy will open for its seventh season on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. The market is moving to a NEW LOCATION in 2017 due to construction on the SSA Senior School campus: it will be located in the parking lot of the SSA far athletic fields at 583 Squaw Run Road East in Fox Chapel. The market will be open from 3-6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, from June 14 through Oct. 25, 2017.

The market features locally sourced, seasonal produce, food and specialty items from farms, vendors and food trucks within a 120-mile radius of campus, including Shady Side Academy's own on-campus farm. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, vendors offer flowers, grass-fed meats, honey, BBQ sauce, gourmet cookies, olive oils and balsamic vinegars, homemade pasta sauce, hummus, coffee, jewelry and more. It's a great place to enjoy dinner or a snack while playing corn hole and listening to live music on a warm summer afternoon!

In addition to the SSA Farm, market vendors for 2017 include Barlow Bakes, Blume Honey Water, Earth Wheel & Fire Pizza, Hanna's Honey, Hello Hummus, Ink Personality, KLVN Coffee, Kona Ice, Magnolia on Main, Old Tin Roof, Olive & Marlowe, The Pickled Chef, Pisarcik Greenhouses & Flower Farm, Pittsburgh Highlander Grass-Fed Beef, Sabika Jewelry, Santarcangelo Specialties and Small Batch Sauces, Sturges Orchards, Weir Meats and 412 BBQ Sauce.

A unique aspect of the Farmers Market is that it is managed in part by Shady Side students and features produce from the school's on-campus farm. This year's market is being organized by returning student market managers and SSA seniors Zac Coughlin and Sophia Del Sole. Other student market managers for 2017 include sophomores Natalie Capretto and Isabella Cavagna and juniors Alicia Mathur and Jack DemchakLearn more about the Fox Chapel Farmers Market.

The SSA Farm, which has garden plots on all of Shady Side Academy's campuses, sells its fresh-picked harvest at the Fox Chapel Farmers Market, at a stand manned by SSA Senior School students. Each summer the farm hires student interns to tend the farm, harvest the produce and sell it at the market. This year's SSA Farm interns are sophomores Grace Anania and Daeja Sanders and freshman Parker Maivald. SSA Farm produce is also used by the Shady Side dining halls for summer camp and school year lunches. Learn more about the SSA Farm.

The Farmers Market and SSA Farm are overseen by Director of SSA Farms Gianna Fazioli.
