Fitzgerald Crowns Madeline Evans as 2018 Miss Smiling Irish Eyes
Court Maidens Roisin Sabol and Erin Sheedy Also Celebrated

County Executive Rich Fitzgerald joined Chairperson Peggy Cooney and representatives of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade today at its annual luncheon to crown Madeline Evans as the 2018 Miss Smiling Irish Eyes, and to also celebrate her court maidens, Roisin Sabol and Erin Sheedy.

“The crowning of Miss Smiling Irish Eyes is always a highlight of the year and it has been my pleasure to have this honor for the last seven years,” said Fitzgerald. “The young women who are honored with this title and duties each year are impressive in their education and accomplishments while also promoting pride in her Irish heritage and ancestry. That is certainly the case with Madeline, Roisin and Erin and congratulate each of them on this honor.”

Miss Smiling Irish Eyes 2018 is Madeline Evans. The daughter of Paul and Julie Evans, Madeline is from the North Hills and is currently a freshman at Villanova University where she is majoring in chemical engineering. She is a member of Villanova’s Irish Dance Team and was also an accomplished track and field athlete at North Hills High School.

The 2018 Court Maidens are Roisin Sabol and Erin Sheedy. Roisin is from Swissvale and is a graduate of Oakland Catholic High School. She is currently a junior at the University of Pittsburgh where she is majoring in neuroscience with minors in chemistry and Mandarin Chinese. Roisin is the daughter of Mary O’Donnell Sabol and Steven Sabol. Erin is a resident of Crafton, and a senior at Oakland Catholic High School where she is on the high honors list. She has been accepted for admission into a number of universities, but has not yet decided where she will attend school next year. Erin is the daughter of Diane and Tim Sheedy.

Pittsburgh’s Miss Smiling Irish Eyes is open to all local young women who meet the following criteria:

·         Be a single woman, of Irish birth or descent, currently residing in the Pittsburgh area;

·         Be between the ages of 17 and 22 years;

·         Be an outstanding representative of the Irish community of Pittsburgh by demonstrating excellent moral character, ethical ideals and poise; and

·         Actively promote her pride in her Irish heritage and ancestry, and show a dedicated involvement to local civic and charitable organizations.

The title of Miss Smiling Irish Eyes has been presented for more than 50 years. The Queen and her court participate in various festivities held the week leading up to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and also have the honor of participating in the second-largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the country.
