 Dr. Frank Sessoms, Beloved Community Leader, dies at 70
FRANK E. SESSOMS M.D. -Died peacefully at home, on Sunday, July 22, 2018, Frank E. Sessoms, M.D., Frank was the son of the late Frank L. and Catherine Sessoms; survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Sandra (Scalise) Sessoms; siblings, Carol Browder, Furmin (Sharon) Sessoms, Vincent (Cynthia) Sessoms, Gloria (Lee) Davis, Norphas (Rita) Sessoms, Dennis, Anthony, Dwight and Mary Catherine Sessoms; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Frank was a graduate of Aliquippa High School, an honors graduate of Tennessee State University and Meharry Medical College, both in Nashville, TN. He attended summer intensive studies at Harvard University. While at Tennessee State University he was involved in the struggle for civil rights. He practiced medicine at St. John's Hospital, Forbes Metro and West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. He had a successful family medicine practice in Pittsburgh. Frank loved people, life and the practice of medicine. His life was a lesson in both giving to others, one of activism and of the pursuit of academic and intellectual excellence. Frank was a voted Minority Physician of the Year by Gateway Medical Society, member of the National Medical Association, Life Member of the NAACP, National Urban League, the FROGS Social Club (Pittsburgh), Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, former member of the Meharry Medical College Board of Trustees (13 years), President Meharry National Alumni Association and member of the Tennessee State University National Alumni Association and Life Member TSU Big Blue Club. The Governor appointed Frank to the Commission on African American Affairs (PA). Indeed Frank Sessoms, M.D. was a renaissance man, a man for all seasons. His passing leaves a deep void in the life of his Sandy, family, patients and friends that he touched. Friends received Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at LAWRENCE T. MILLER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 460 Lincoln Avenue, Bellevue. Additional Visitation at Tried Stone Baptist Church, 503 Washington Street, Aliquippa on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Interment will be private at Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery, Ross Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions suggested to Meharry Medical College, Gift Management Services, 1005 Dr. D. B. Todd, Jr. Blvd., Nashville, TN 37208.
