BPEP announces new grant and major new hire: Community Liason Kenneth L. Huston

The Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP) and the Coalition Against Violence (CAV) are pleased to announce that they have received a three-year grant totaling $100,000 from The Pittsburgh Foundation. Many thanks go to Jane Downing, Senior Program Officer for Economic & Community Development; Kevin Jenkins, Senior Program officer and Director of Community Initiatives and to others at the foundation, for having faith and belief in the work of this organization.
The overarching goal for this grant is to further enhance the civic and voter engagement work of B-PEP and to enhance the work of the Coalition Against Violence in implementing strategies for reducing the impact of violence and crime in the Pittsburgh region. B-PEP has been in the forefront of political empowerment for the African American community since its launching on May 21, 1986. The Coalition Against Violence was launched in the lobby of the Hill House Association on February 8, 2007.
B-PEP/CAV is also pleases to announce that Kenneth L. Huston has been hired as B-PEP's first ever Community Liaison. Ken brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the position of Community Liaison through his mediation skills, his entrepreneurial skills, and his community volunteer work. He was also interim Director for Employment Training and Entrepreneurial Development for the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh from 2007 to 2009.
Ken's work focus will include assisting with B-EP's on-going commitment to civic and voter engagement, as well as facilitating the work of the Coalition Against Violence in five (5) areas over the next three (3) years. These five major areas are identified within Strategies for Change: The Full Document:
*       Education,
*       Youth Leadership and Empowerment
*       Civic Engagement "The Role of the Citizen",
*       Juvenile Justice; Restorative and Rehabilitative Justice; and Gun Violence Reduction
*       The Role of the Media
Furthermore, recent incidents that have occurred both nationally and in the Pittsburgh region, such as teen dating violence, Facebook issues, cyber bullying leading to suicide and other violent acts clearly demonstrate the relevancy of continuing and expanding the work of the Coalition.
The Coalition Against Violence will be reconvening on Monday, May 10, 2010. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. at Freedom Unlimited located at 2201 Wylie Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Participants will be reviewing and adding new strategies to the CAV documents. The University of Pittsburgh has agreed to print the second edition of both the Coalition documents: Strategies for Change: The Full Document and the Community Services Directory.
