African Community

General Information

Like many other immigrants, Africans are hard working people who come to America to seek a better life. Some come voluntarily, while others are forced out due to circumstances beyond their control, such as wars, civil strife, or political threats in their countries. Some are here as students, migrant workers, or refugees. Africans place a high value on a good education, and work hard to achieve their goals in life.

The African community contributes greatly to the wealth of Southwestern Pennsylvania  in many ways--whether by sharing their cultures, or by growing and diversifying the economy of a state with a shrinking population. Their growing numbers help to stabilize the future workforce and industry in the region. The African community in Southwestern Pennsylvania is an expression of many African countries, each with its special gifts.
